Terwillegar park Footbridge

Edmonton, Alberta

The Terwillegar Park Footbridge serves as the final link between Terwillegar Park and the River Valley Trail System, enhancing accessibility and the pedestrian experience. As the first multi-span stressed ribbon bridge in Canada and the northernmost of its kind globally, its slender, undulating form responds to the valley’s topography, creating a seamless interaction between nature and infrastructure.

Inspired by the diverse bird species along the Northern Saskatchewan River, the bridge features split canopies reminiscent of bird wings. These canopies not only provide shelter and visual interest but also direct rainfall into controlled channels, creating a waterfall effect at key overlook points—merging function, ecology, and aesthetics.

As a result, the bridge stands as a landmark of sustainable and thoughtful design, blending innovation with the natural landscape.
