mobile river Bridge
Mobile, Alabama
The Mobile River Bridge is the defining centerpiece of the I‑10 Mobile River crossing, carrying Gulf Coast travelers, freight, and port‑driven commerce across one of Alabama’s most vital maritime corridors. As the long‑awaited solution to chronic congestion at the Wallace Tunnel, the new crossing will play a pivotal role in strengthening mobility for the Port of Mobile, one of the nation’s fastest‑growing container gateways, and supporting the economic vitality of the broader Gulf Coast region. Its delivery marks a rare opportunity to shape a next‑generation piece of infrastructure that enhances connectivity while elevating the visual and civic identity of Mobile’s working waterfront.
To realize this transformative project, the Alabama Department of Transportation has advanced a progressive design‑build effort that brings together national engineering expertise and dedicated architectural leadership. This collaborative model enables designers, engineers, and stakeholders to work in concert from the outset, ensuring that technical performance, environmental stewardship, and architectural expression evolve as an integrated whole. The approach reflects the state’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and design excellence on one of the most consequential transportation investments in Alabama’s history.
The new Mobile River Bridge will become Alabama’s first major cable‑stayed highway structure, distinguished by its monumental clarity and purposeful form. With a 215‑foot navigational clearance to support the port’s growing deep‑draft vessel traffic and elegant towers rising prominently above the river, the bridge will establish a new benchmark for engineering ambition and architectural presence along the Gulf Coast. More than a functional crossing, it is envisioned as a symbolic gateway to Mobile; an expression of resilience, regional pride, and the transformative potential of 21st‑century infrastructure.

As bridge architect for the Mobile River Bridge, Donald MacDonald Architects is shaping the project’s defining architectural elements, from the signature cable‑stayed towers to the approach structures and the full suite of typical details that establish a cohesive visual identity across the crossing. The team is developing extensive visual simulations, proportion studies, and aesthetic analyses to refine tower geometry and overall form, ensuring the structure expresses both structural clarity and a strong civic presence for Mobile’s riverfront. In close collaboration with the project’s local Aesthetic Steering Committee, DMD is advancing an architectural vocabulary that reflects regional character, integrating feedback directly into the bridge’s silhouette, lighting concepts, and material palette. Parallel efforts focus on the approach spans, where DMD is crafting a unified rhythm from land to main span; carefully coordinating barriers, lighting, and profile transitions to balance safety, durability, and an elegant, Gulf‑Coast‑specific identity.
