Donald MacDonald Architects provided consultation to HDR engineers on aesthetic design of this unique tied-arch bridge. The DMD/HDR team collaborated with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, along with Winston- Salem’s Creative Corridors Coalition, incorporating extensive community input. The Bridge is part of the Creative Corridors Coalition vision for a connective and inclusive network, a nonprofit focused on revitalizing and reconnecting underserved communities impacted by the interstate.

Located in the downtown area of Winston- Salem, the project connects the West Salem (southside) neighborhood with Truist Stadium and other north- side destinations. Serving as gateway into downtown, two pairs of unbraced arches are drawn from the form of oak trees common in the local landscape. Since its completion, it has become a heavily used link in the pedestrian and bicycle network.
